Various sketches c.1908-1911

Isabel had an interest in art and architecture. She was often inspired by the sights that she saw as she travelled, frequently writing vivid descriptions or making sketches of particular sights or objects in her journal. This image contains a selection of some of these sketches.

To the far left is a drawing found on the inside cover of a journal describing her trip to Turkey in 1908. It depicts the daywear of a local shepherd. The sketch itself is undated.

The image on the far left at the top is also undated and appears within a few pages of the first image in this journal. Though it is not explicitly labelled, it appears to depict some form of Turkish menswear.

The final two sketches are taken from her journal entry of Monday 21st December, in which she describes the sights she sees as she travels over the Hungarian plains. In the picture in the middle she has sketched some local scenery, including the maize stacks that contributed to the landscape of the plains. In the bottom left picture she has sketched some of the passing architecture, including a local house and a plaited fence.
