Prospectus for The Farmhouse School (Mayortorne Manor, Buckinghamshire)

The Farmhouse School took pupils aged between 8 and 18 years. Regardless of age, they rose early each day to look after the animals and attend to farm duties before breakfast at 8am.

Formal subjects were taught Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm. These comprised of English, mathematics, history, geography, French, German, Italian, music, art and gymnastics - which included something called Swedish Drill. This military sounding activity was a form of gymnastics invented by a Swedish fencing instructor in the nineteenth-century. In addition though, learning about science, nature, accounting and other subjects happened through work activities on the farm.

On Sundays the pupils were given time to go on walks in the countryside, write letters and read books.
